About the speaker:
Jeff Bagwell is a former professional baseball player best known for his storied career with the Houston Astros. Born on May 27, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts, Bagwell began his professional journey as a third baseman before transitioning to first base, where he became one of the most dominant players of his era. Acquired by the Astros in a trade with the Boston Red Sox in 1990, Bagwell made an immediate impact and earned National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1991. He went on to play his entire 15-season MLB career in Houston, where his combination of power, plate discipline, and defense earned him four All-Star selections, a Gold Glove Award, and the 1994 National League MVP.
Bagwell finished his career with 449 home runs, 1,529 RBIs, and a .297 batting average, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest first basemen in baseball history. Known for his distinctive batting stance and intense approach to the game, he was also a key figure in helping the Astros reach their first World Series in 2005. After retiring in 2005, Bagwell continued his association with the Astros as a coach and advisor. His contributions to the game were recognized in 2017 when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
